GARDENS & PALAZZOS OF VENICE & THE VENETO
The tour begins on the island of La Giudecca at the exclusive five-star Bauer Palladio Hotel. This 16th century Palladian convent is a jewel of rare beauty. Whilst in Venice, we call in at a rose garden on the Grand Canal, explore a vegetable garden tended by monks, discover the flowers that inspired the Fortuny prints, and visit a remarkable garden designed by Carlo Scarpa. In Verona, we are based at the five-star Hotel Due Torri from where we visit a fascinating variety of gardens including one on a private island on Lake Garda and the exquisite green theatre at Villa Rizzardi. We also enjoy traditional dishes in local restaurants and as guests at two private villas. Jenny Condie joins us in Venice to introduce the rich history of the city through its diverse and intriguing gardens. The tour will be hosted throughout by Annie Guilfoyle.
Day 1: Monday, 13th May
The tour starts in Venice at 18:30 hrs in the foyer of the Bauer Palladio Hotel on La Guidecca (for help & advice on travelling from the hotel to the hotel please do contact the Boxwood office). We have reserved rooms that overlook the courtyard and beautiful garden, each decorated with frescoed walls and fine tapestries in soft colours reflecting the peaceful and serene surroundings. This evening we dine together at the hotel with local Venetian wines included. Jenny Condie joins at the hotel with a short per-dinner talk about Venice and its gardens. Evening meal with wine included today.
Day 2: Tuesday, 14th May
Gardens in Venice are not large, so today we include three visits. As there are no cars in Venice we walk between gardens and with an occasional Vaparetto boat ride. From our hotel, we travel by boat to Palazzo Malipiero Barnabò on the Grand Canal where we are invited for a private view of the beautiful, rose-filled garden. Then we lead you to the romantic secluded garden of Palazzo Soranzo Cappello where Henry James stayed and where he wrote ‘The Aspen Papers’. A light lunch is included before visiting a productive monastic garden near the Scalzi Church. Return to the hotel for a free evening. Jenny Condie joins on this day. Lunch included today.
Day 3: Wednesday, 15th May
We start the day by visiting Palazzo Querini Stampalia to see the designs of Carlo Scarpa. Water gives the appearance of passing through the Palazzo, entering from the canal through water gates and flowing along rills before appearing again in the garden in a many-levelled copper basin. We then visit the recently restored Giardini Reali created by Napoleon along the waterfront near San Marco and currently being restored under the guidance of Paolo Perrone, one of Italy’s most famous designers. Later in the afternoon we visit The Fortuny showroom & gardens. In 1919, Fortuny purchased land on the island of La Giudecca. Although no visitors are permitted to enter the factory itself, we will be shown the showroom and the adjacent gardens. Many Fortuny fabrics are known for their intricate floral patterns which feature exuberant vines, twisting stems and flowers in full bloom. These printed plants come to life in the garden with hydrangeas, roses, oleanders, and a host of other flora. We then return to the hotel with time to change before eating out at a famous Giudecca restaurant. Jenny Condie joins on this day. Evening meal with wine included today.
Day 4: Thursday, 16th May
Leave the hotel by private boat and journey across the lagoon and up the Brenta Canal to join the coach. En route to Verona, we visit Villa Fracanzan Piovene as special guests of Francesca Giusti Piovene and Nicolò Giusti who invite us to a light lunch and to view their gardens, orchards and amazing collection of vintage tractors as well as the villa with its incredible 17th century kitchens. We then continue to Verona to view the exquisite Giardino Giusti and the newly restored 16th century palazzo that has been in the ownership of the Giusti family for over four hundred years. We arrive at the Hotel Due Torri with time to settle in before dining together in the hotel restaurant. Lunch and Evening Meal with wine included today.
Day 5: Friday, 17th May
We glide across the waters of Lake Garda to visit the small private island and garden of Isola di Garda. Following a light lunch, we take the boat to the opposite shore to re-join the coach and for a visit and wine tasting at the 18th century garden of Villa Rizzardi, famous for its magnificent green theatre. We then return to Verona for a free evening. Lunch and wine tasting included today.
Day 6: Saturday, 18th May
Drive to Padua to visit the famous Cappella degli Scrovegni and the Giotto fresco’s that were completed in 1305. Free time for lunch is followed by a visit to the city’s ancient Padua Botanic Gardens where modern glass houses built to a cutting-edge design have just been completed next to the 16th century garden. Later in the afternoon we visit the famous 17th century garden of Villa Barbarigo at Valsanzibio, with its exquisite water gate, pools, statues, maze and rabbit island. We then return to Verona to dine together in a local restaurant. Evening meal with wine included today.
Day 7: Sunday, 19th May
Leaving Verona, we visit Castello del Catajo, a 16th century fortified villa with shady gardens, giant Magnolia grandiflora and citrus followed by a special lunch at Villa Pisani Bolognesi Scalabrin at Vescovana and a tour of the romantic garden, a piece of Victorian England transposed to the Venetian plain via Turkey. Return to Marco Polo Airport for 16:30 hrs. Lunch is included today.
