Gardens of Haute-Normandie
from Varengeville to Giverny
September 23- 27, 2018
Departing from Aberystwyth, you travel to Dieppe in Normandy by coach where there has been created a wealth of remarkable gardens that thread their way from Varengeville-sur-Mer to Giverny, from the sea to the River Seine: country gardens set amidst old cider orchards, lush rolling pastures, and mixed woodland, mostly owned by passionate gardeners with excellent plant collections. Many of these are private gardens where you will meet garden owners and head gardeners. The group will be accompanied by a linguistic guide speaking both French and English. You stay in the four-star Hôtel la Présidence, a bright modern hotel in the old part of Dieppe between the castle and the medieval gatehouse, close to the sea in the port of Dieppe from where it is a short stroll to a bustling centre with many good restaurants from which to choose.
Day 1:  Sunday 23rd September
Depart by coach from Aberystwyth at 06:00 AM, driving to Folkstone to take the Eurotunnel Shuttle with your coach to Calais.  You then continue the journey to Dieppe with time to book in at the Hôtel la Présidence and to dine together in a private room. Please note that all rooms have sea views.
Day 2:  Monday 24th September
This morning a short drive to Varengeville-sur-Mer, one small village on the Alabaster Coast (La Côte d'Albâtre) featuring a cluster of exceptional gardens. Varengeville-sur-Mer, has long been popular with artists and aristocrats, with strong links with Britain just across the channel. In 1898, Sir Edwin Lutyens designed Bois des Moutiers for Guillaume Mallet and his wife, the heiress Marie-Adélaïde Grunelius. The commission changed all their lives and the profile of the village. Lutyens worked with Gertrude Jekyll on the design and planting of the gardens, this being their only French garden project.  Other people of influence moved to the village, met with the Mallet family, exchanged plants and ideas and started to garden. Down a country lane on the outskirts of the village we meet Robert Mallet (grandson of Guillaume Mallet) for a guided tour of Shamrock, his remarkable collection of Hydrangea (thought to be the most comprehensive in the world) thriving beneath a plantation of Paulownia trees. Further down the road we visit Le Vasterival, the famous woodland garden created in the Gardenesque style by the late Princess Greta Sturdza of Norway, now owned by her nephew and his wife, Irene who is developing a passion for the garden. Under sensitive direction and with meticulous care by a superb team of gardeners, Le Vasterival is reaching a new peak of excellence and charm. Lunch in a local restaurant overlooking the sea is included before a visit and a special guided tour of the house and garden of Le Bois des Moutiers. Return to Dieppe for a free evening.
Day 3:  Tuesday 25th September
Today, you visit three remarkable gardens in the heart of Normandy: Jardin Agapanthe is described by the owner and garden designer, Alexandre Thomas, as his laboratory, a site of ongoing research. This contemporary garden is defined by a powerful structure and rich planting designs. You then head for Giverny to see the garden of Claude Monet with time to wander and enjoy the whole experience. After free time for lunch in Giverny, you travel to Jardin Plume where rustic charm meets French formality. Owners, Patrick & Sylvie Quibel’s seven-acre garden has swathes of tall grasses restrained by finely manicured, geometric hedges and vibrant, flower-filled beds.  You then return to Dieppe to dine together at the hotel.
Day 4:  Wednesday 26th September
Return to Varengeville-sur-Mer to visit a modern garden, now described as ‘the most exciting new garden in Europe’. This beautiful woodland garden is set in a dell dramatically overlooked by the strikingly contemporary house. The passion, knowledge and enthusiasm of the owner makes this garden so very special, with his excellent eye for the placement of choice trees and shrubs on a grand scale, many selected for outstanding bark or foliage. We are then invited by the owner Mme Rometet to lunch at Château de Miromesnil followed by her introduction to the working potager and grounds of this beautiful small château. You then return to Dieppe to dine together at a good local restaurant.
Day 5: Thursday 27th September
Following a light continental breakfast, you leave Dieppe at 06:30 AM. The coach will then drive to Calais to catch the return Eurotunnel Shuttle train. On the return journey there will be time to stop to see the Royal Horticultural Society Garden at Wisley with time to purchase your own lunch. There will be a reduction of £12.20 per person on the tour price for those who confirm RHS membership at the time of booking.
