THE TELEGRAPH in association with Boxwood Tours
GARDENS OF THE COTSWOLDS: 24th to 27th June, 2018
An exclusive TELEGRAPH weekend tour hosted by gardens correspondent and writer, HELEN YEMM
THIS TOUR IS NOW FULLY BOOKED
Enjoy a hand-picked selection of the finest, mostly private gardens in an easily accessible location, based at a first-rate hotel with excellent food and comfortable accommodation. The Cotswolds are a beautiful region of rolling hills and far reaching views interspersed with ochre-coloured manor houses & cottages surrounded by a wealth of wonderful, high-calibre gardens. Long traditions of craftsmanship are evident in the architecture, interiors and landscapes. We have carefully selected some outstanding private gardens, including Upton Wold and Rockcliffe, as well as special visits to gardens not usually open to the public: at Kiftsgate Court we enter the garden before the official opening time; at Barnsley we view the work of Rosemary Verey with Head Gardener Richard Gatenby, who gardened with her in the past. We stay at an excellent hotel nestling in the heart of the historic market town of Moreton-in-Marsh: the award-winning Manor House Hotel, justly renowned for warm hospitality and good food.
A VISIT TO HIGHGROVE HAS JUST BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS TOUR
Day 1: Sunday, June 24
This tour will start at 12:00 noon at Moreton-in-Marsh, a railway station with a good through service from London. Parking is also available at the hotel for those who wish to drive. We start with a special buffet lunch and a private visit to Upton Wold Manor. Owners Caroline and Ian Bond have spent the past thirty years restoring the charming gardens complete with deep curving herbaceous borders, pool garden, orchards (including the National Juglans or walnut collection), wild flower meadows, woodland garden and vegetable gardens as well as a wonderful vista. We then drive the short distance to The Manor House for time to settle before an evening meal together with wine included.
Day 2: Monday, June 25
Kiftsgate Court is built on a magnificent site with three steep banks falling away to far-reaching views towards the Malvern Hills & Wales. This garden excels in roses and gorgeous herbaceous perennials using a rich palette ranging from deepest purple, blue, magenta and pink to the softest pastel shades. This is the home of Rosa filipes ‘Kiftsgate’ which clambers through the tall trees, and of the Chambers family who have extended a rare private invitation to an early visit plus lunch. We then travel the short distance to Highgrove where HRH The Prince of Wales has created a private paradise over the past thirty-five years. Following a special guided tour, we enjoy a Champagne Afternoon Tea in the Orchard Restaurant with time to visit the Highgrove Shop.
Day 3: Tuesday, June 26
After a leisurely start, we travel to Barnsley House to see the remarkable and influential gardens created by Rosemary Verey, featuring her knot gardens, statues by Simon Verity, a Laburnum walk, ornamental fruit & vegetable gardens and some stunning borders. We enjoy lunch at Barnsley before going on to visit Rockcliffe, where Emma Keswick and her Head Gardener, Thomas Underdorfer, have been instrumental in embellishing the garden with topiary yew birds, a scented swimming pool garden, pastel shaded herbaceous borders and a great deal of flair and care that make this a star garden. Return to The Manor House for evening meal together with wine.
Day 4: Wednesday, June 27
We visit two outstanding gardens on the northern edge of the Cotswolds where the stone is a stronger ochre colour. Firstly, Broughton Castle where Lord Saye and Sele, acting on the advice of Lanning Roper, opened up the views to the surrounding parkland and created two magnificent borders: serpentine rivers of complementary colours. A visit to the castle and home of the Saye and Sele family is included before a simple lunch at the estate café. Near-by we discover the private gardens of Broughton Grange, a wonderful contemporary garden with fine topiary and borders designed by Tom Stuart-Smith. We then return to Moreton-in-Marsh Railway Station for 16:00.
