'Twixt Devon & Cornwall....
PLEASE CALL 01341 241 717 TO CHECK AVAILABILITY ON THIS TOUR BEFORE BOOKING
British gardens just get better and better. For this, yet another fresh and unique Boxwood Tour, we head to the beautiful pastoral banks of the River Tamar, criss-crossing between Devon and Cornwall to visit a remarkable selection of gardens. The river rises close to the north coast, flowing down through rich west-country farmland to meet the sea adjacent to Plymouth. Near its source we find a small mill garden with an abundance of wild flowers; a very private arts & crafts garden surrounding the beautiful Jacobean Manor, extended by Sir Edwin Lutyens; at Wildside, we experience what has been described as the most innovative, daring and vibrant new garden in Britain. Near the mouth of the river we visit Trematon, the much acclaimed home of garden designers Julian & Isabel Bannerman. To cap it all, we stay at the enchanting Hotel Endsleigh overlooking the fast-flowing River Tamar with stunning gardens thought to be one of the last commissions of Humphry Repton, originally a hunting lodge belonging to the Dukes of Bedford, now beautifully revived by hotelier Olga Polizzi of the famous Forte family: all in all, the perfect base for a tour of the gardens of the Tamar Valley.
Day 1: Monday 2nd July
This tour starts at Tiverton Parkway Railway Station at 13:30. We first journey together to Hotel Endsleigh for afternoon tea on the terrace before a special tour of the gardens by the head gardener,
through the wooded walks, along the side of the River Tamar and then round to the Shell House and stunning terraced gardens with plenty of time to settle in before an evening meal together.
Day 2: Tuesday 3rd July
On the upper reaches of the Tamar, we are invited to visit Penheale, a Jacobean Manor house restored by the Colville family in the 1920’s with the help of Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, whose influence can still be found today in the walled gardens. Lunch will be at the pretty Cowslip Workshops before moving upstream to Bridge Mill. Alan & Rosie Beat’s garden includes a working water mill, a meadow of wildflowers and a well worked vegetable garden. We then call in for a drink at Glebe House where Caroline Stone invites us to wander around her garden to discuss primroses, peonies and the experience of creating a garden in the Tamar valley. Return to the hotel with time to change before dining together.
Day 3: Wednesday 4th July
Heading downstream, we visit Trematon Castle Garden, creation of Julian and Isabel Bannerman. The vibrant gardens are planted around a miniature motte-and-bailey Norman castle with commanding views of Plymouth Sound. We then travel back up-stream to Pentillie and lunch with dramatic views of the river before seeing Repton’s plans in the ‘red book’ and a woodland walk with the owner. Further north, in the village of Buckland Monachoram, we are invited to see Wildside, created by Keith & Ros Wiley. Using an excavator, Keith has sculpted a new garden from a flat field and with great skill and daring has planted it with a thriving abundance of wonderful plants. We return to the hotel with time to change before dining together.
Day 4: Thursday 5th July
As we move away from the Tamar Valley we are invited to another special garden, Plaz Metaxu (‘the place that is in-between’) where owner, Alasdair Forbes will introduce us to his challenging symbolic garden, one of the most ambitious of contemporary intellectual gardens in the country. We then enjoy lunch together before returning to Tiverton Parkway for 16:00
