If you love the perfume of roses on an early summer’s day and have always promised yourself time to discover more of this vast and varied genus, then this is the tour for you: a gentle journey enjoying roses in some wonderful gardens, featuring the outstanding David Austin show garden collection as well as a ‘behind the scenes’, private view of David Austin’s own garden. Also featured are Powis Castle, Coughton Court, Ragley Hall and Wollerton Old Hall plus a visit to Michael Marriott’s own new garden and an opportunity to meet Katherine Swift to hear about her new book, A Rose for Morville due out in 2018. Don your rose-tinted specs and see gardens in a new light. Stroll from rose to rose discussing the merits of under-planting, mulching, pruning, budding, training, and indeed even the name of the rose in the company of a great rose enthusiast & expert. You will stay throughout the tour at the award-winning Brockencote Hall an outstanding example of a country house hotel.

Day 1: Sunday 17th June
The tour commences at Shrewsbury Railway Station at 12 noon from where we travel by coach to Powis Castle for a light lunch before walking down through the famous terraced gardens where the roses line the walls and are key elements in the rich mixed borders which are set off by the gargantuan hedges. Driving down the Welsh borders towards Ludlow, you are invited to visit Michael Marriott’s own new small garden already featuring Michael’s favourite roses. We then drive on to Brockencote Hall Hotel with time to settle before an evening meal together with wine included.
Day 2: Monday 18th June
We head out to David Austin Roses for a ‘behind the scenes’ tour with Michael, including a private view of David Austin’s own garden. We then have lunch together with time to visit the rose themed shop before travelling on to The Dower House Garden at Morville Hall, lovingly created and described by garden historian Katherine Swift in her first book ‘The Morville Hours’. Katherine will talk to us over a cup of tea about her new book ‘A Rose for Morville’. Return to Brockencote Hall Hotel.
Day 3: Tuesday 19th June
We start the day with a special visit to Coughton Court, home of the Throckmortons, presented with the Award of Garden Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies, boasting over 75 different varieties of Rose beautifully grown in mixed borders in the walled garden. We are there invited to lunch, and an organic rosé wine tasting. In the afternoon, we visit Ragley Hall, ancestral seat of the Marquess of Hertford. We take tea on the terrace overlooking the Rose terrace where unusually the roses are planted in great informal drifts. Beyond is one of the finest Capability Brown landscapes in the country. We then return to Brockencote Hall Hotel for our last evening together.
Day 4: Wednesday 20th June
Our final day begins with a visit to Hodnet Hall, home of the Heber-Percy family, with well-kept beds of hybrid tea roses. Close by we discover Wollerton Old Hall Gardens, a delightful 20th century garden around a 16th century manor house with wonderful borders and a fine nursery where plants can be purchased. A light lunch is included at Wollerton. Return to Shrewsbury Railway Station for 16:00 and to the hotel for 16:30 for those who have left cars.
