A Lakeland Collection
Gardens of Windermere and the English Lakes
The English Lake District is a region in Cumbria in the North-West of England and is renowned for its dramatic beauty including England’s highest mountains and finest lakes. Previous home to William Wordsworth, the Lakeland poets and Beatrice Potter we also find fine Arts & Crafts houses and gardens as well as a contrasting range of wonderful gardens, especially in the warmer south of the region. The Lakeside Hotel sits on the lower reaches of Lake Windermere, a very welcoming, friendly hotel with our selected rooms overlooking the lake. The seamless blend of country-house character and contemporary four-star luxury with fine dining inspired by local produce will help you feel completely at home.
Day 1: Sunday 18th June
The tour starts at Manchester International Airport at 11:00hrs. The coach will meet you here and then drive to the iconic Levens Hall and its remarkable topiary garden, where we meet head gardener, Chris Crowder who will show us the ancient clipped yews and wonderful summer flowering borders. A simple lunch is included at Levens on arrival. We then drive to The Lakeside Hotel with time to settle in before an evening meal together in the AA 2-Rosette Lakeside Restaurant.
Day 2: Monday 19th June
Holehird is a unique garden maintained to perfection entirely by volunteers, all members of The Lakeland Horticultural Society. The sloping garden overlooks Lake Windermere and includes National Collections of Astilbe, Meconopsis, Daboecia and Polystichum Ferns. Not far away is Windy Hall, a 4 acre fell-side garden with views across Windermere to Coniston Old Man. Owners, David Kinsman & Diane Hewitt, are both passionate gardeners. Diane is now the County organiser for the National Gardens Scheme and both know much about gardens and gardening in the Lakes. In addition to fine plants you will encounter rare and beautiful pheasants and Hebridean & St Kilda sheep. We are invited to a light lunch before visiting Middle Blakebank. A well planted garden with extensive views south to Morecombe Bay and the Lyth Valley, an area that used to be famous for its Damson orchards. We dine together this evening at the ‘John Ruskin Brasserie’ at The Lakeside Hotel.
Day 3: Tuesday 20th June
We take a boat up the length of Windermere, then continuing through the heart of the lakes to High Moss, an important Arts and Craft house with a diamond pattern theme running throughout the house and garden (although sadly we are unable to see in the house), the layout of the garden has changed little although the present owners have developed the vegetable, fruit and cut flower garden and are improving the maintenance of the terraces of roses and rhododendrons that run down from the house to the woodland beyond. Hutton-in-the-Forest is the historic home of Lord & Lady Inglewood and dates back to mediaeval times. It is mentioned in the legends of King Arthur. More recently they have developed their flower filled walled gardens and opened up the views at the front of the house to the lake. Lunch is included at Hutton on arrival. Chapelside, a one acre garden around the 18th century farmhouse that remains in touch with its fell-side surroundings, contrasting spaces surround the house that is embellished by the artwork of the owner. You are invited to tea and scones with the owners today before returning to the Lakeside Hotel to dine together.
Day 4: Wednesday 21st June
We start the day at Holker Hall with a tour of the house and atmospheric gardens: formal gardens with very fine topiary and extensive woodland gardens leading out to the deer park. The current owners are both very much involved with the development of the gardens with a passion for collecting trees and shrubs. After lunch together at Holker, we visit Yewbarrow House set above Grange-over-Sands with a sensational panorama of Morecambe Bay with miles of tidal sands, grassy salt flats and glinting sea. Jonathan Denby, the owner has filled south facing terraces with rich coloured exotic species at their best in late summer.
Day 5: Thursday 22nd June
Leaving the Lake District behind travel south to Gresgarth Hall. This rare and wonderful garden is the country home of Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd, an Italian born English Garden Designer. Every detail is carefully thought through with much to see at all times of year, including the fine productive and seductive kitchen garden. Lunch together in a local inn before returning to Manchester International Airport for 16:00.
